A Guide to Modem-Router Combos
The modem and router are two major components of the system that gets your home computer or mobile devices connected to the internet. Communication with your internet service provider is made possible through the modem. It is called a cable modem if it connected to your cable provider through a coaxial cable. If it is connected to your telephone line, then it is a DSL modem. Your modem will necessarily depend on the ISP’s infrastructure capability. It could also be fiber or satellite.
A router makes it possible to share internet connection with other devices in your home or office. If you have a wireless router, you can create a Wi-Fi network that devices can connect to. If there are Ethernet cables, there are also routers which has ports for these. It is through the modem that the router connects devices to the internet. The router is the recipient and owner of a single IP address on the internet which servers on the net can connect to.
Firewalls or protective barricades against the internet come with routers. With the router firewall, it gives protection in hardware format, in addition to the software firewall found in your computer.
Routers and modems are combine in one piece of equipment with ADSL devices.
There are only a few cosmetic differences with modem-router combos but all brands basically work the same way.
You can choose from many different types of modem-router combos with prices varying from less than fifty dollars to those over a hundred.
If your internet is provided through cable network, then the modem is a standard one called DOCSIS 3.0 which is the latest format across all brands. If it is a DSL connection, you would go for a VDSL connection for speeds greater than 15 Mbps, and an ADSL connection for lesser speeds.
It is easier to choose a router. Two types of technology are used with routers. The fast AC which has beam forming technology, directs a beam at your device instead of the radius wifi technology. New and old devices work well on this technology. The speed can range from 100 Mbps to 5300 Mbps.
It is always better to buy a modem and router on your own rather than going for what your service provider is providing for a low rent. The difference in internet speed is worth spending a few hundred dollars for.
Instead of getting a separate modem and router, it is better to have one unit that serves both function, a modem-router combo. If you are getting all the features of the best modem and the best router, then you get a good system since different brands can be used together.
